rollsIMG_1274Everyone should have a good dinner roll recipe in their kitchen arsenal. Sometimes a meal is just not complete without a fluffy, warm, buttery roll. Yeah,  I hear you, yeast and kneading that sounds scary. I promise you, there is nothing to be afraid of with these homemade rolls.  I use a bread machine on the dough setting and there’s nothing to it.   You just throw the ingredients in the bread pan and it does all the work.  I’ve also included the directions  for an electric stand mixer or to mix by hand. Once the dough is mixed and kneaded, it’s time to shape them into the perfect roll, let them rise and then pop them in the oven. Bet you can’t eat just one!

Butter Rolls

3/4 Cup Milk

1 teaspoon Salt

1/4 Cup Water

1/4 Cup Butter

1 Egg

2 3/4 Cups Bread Flour

2 Tablespoons Sugar

2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast

Directions for Bread Maker

  1.  Select the Dough setting on your Bread Maker.
  2. Press start.
  3. When unit signals done, press Stop and remove the dough.
  4. Shape as desired.
  5. Cover with tea towel and let rise until doubled in size, about an hour.
  6. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15 minutes until golden on top and baked through.  Spread the tops with butter after removing from the oven.

Directions for Stand Mixer or by Hand

  1. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the dough hook (or in a large bowl if mixing by hand), combine the milk, salt, water, and butter   Mix all ingredients.
  2. Add the egg, yeast, sugar, and 2 cups of flour. Mix well.
  3. Continue adding the rest of the flour until the dough clears the sides of the bowl and is soft and smooth,   You do not want the dough to be too sticky.  Add more flour if needed, but do not over flour the dough.
  4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a large, lightly greased bowl and cover with greased plastic wrap. Let the dough rise until doubled, about 1 – 1 1/2 hours.
  6. Lightly punch down the dough and  Shape as desired.
  7. Cover the rolls with a tea towel and let them rise until doubled, about an hour.
  8. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15 minutes until golden on top and baked through. Spread the tops with butter after removing from the oven.
