We were on staycation last week and we visited some sites within an hour radius of our home.  One day we toured our own little hometown…visiting coffee shops, wineries, and art galleries.  Sometimes it is so easy to neglect the finer things that your own hometown has to offer.  As we toured the quaint little shops, every shop owner asked where we were from. Guess they don’t get many locals! We had one shop owner ask, what is a staycation? We were really excited to explain it was our mini vacation at home.  The great thing about it was we really were able to relax and re-energize.  And we splurged on some fine dining too. One of the local restaurants gave me the inspiration for this gnocchi with beef tips.  For me, there is nothing better than recreating an elegant, restaurant quality dinner! Hope you enjoy!

  • Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • Butter

Marsala Gnocchi

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 6 oz mushrooms, sliced *See note for substitutes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 green onion, sliced
  • 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup marsala wine
  • 16 oz. potato gnocchi
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or basil optional
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan optional

Instructions

Steak Tips

  1. Trim off the excess fat from the meat, and then cut into thin strips. Sprinkle with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.

  2. In a large skillet add about 2 tablespoons butter to the skillet. Allow the butter to melt, and get very hot, but be careful that it doesn't burn.  Then add the steak. Let the meat cook undisturbed for about 1 minute.  Once it begins to sizzle and brown on one side. Flip it over and cook the other side.

  3. Cook for an additional minute just long enough to sear the outside of the meat.  Transfer to a plate, and keep warm.

Marsala Gnocchi

  1. In the same skillet that you cooked the steak, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.

  2. Add mushrooms, garlic, sliced green onions, marjoram, salt & pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes.

  3. Add broth, marsala cooking wine, and gnocchi. Cover and cook 3-5 minutes, or until gnocchi is softened. Be careful not to overcook.

  4. Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream, until well blended.  Transfer to a serving dish and top with steak tips. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and Parmesan, if desired.

Recipe Notes

Great substitutes for mushrooms are chopped cauliflower, eggplant or artichoke hearts.
